During a celebration of Global Handwashing Day

Working with Partners

Global Handwashing Day

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and with funding from UNICEF, on 15 October 2012 the Centre organised a celebration of Global Handwashing Day, aimed at improving hygiene awareness and best practice.

This event aims to teach children the right way to wash their hands, and to raise awareness of the importance of hand washing in protecting against the spread of disease. Approximately 1,200 students participated in the celebration, which included theatre, storytelling, film screenings and drawing.

Third Palestinian Science Festival

The Qattan Centre for the Child hosted the third annual Palestinian Science Festival from 6 to 11 November 2012 in Gaza, attracting nearly 1,800 students. Funded by the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem, the event was held in partnership with UNESCO, An-Najah National University, Palestine Polytechnic University, Birzeit University, Jerusalem University, and the Al Nayzak Organisation.

Festival activities aimed to encourage children to embrace scientific knowledge and discovery. The festival encompassed five main themes, including: One Thousand and One Inventions, which explored remarkable inventions and inventors from the golden era of Islam; Palestinian Inventors, in which young Palestinian inventors explained their projects; Science Madness, which was comprised of illusion games, bubbles and music; Time Tunnel, where children learned about scientific achievements of the past and present; and the Young Inventors’ Laboratory, where children participated in interactive activities.

Short Film Week

As part of Short Film Week, which was launched on 19 December 2012, and in cooperation with Al-Kasaba Theatre and Cinematique in Ramallah; the Qattan Centre for the Child organised screenings of short films based on the reality of daily life in Palestine, in addition to German and French films, and children’s films. Nearly 1,800 people attended.
